Guide: How to Clean Up Your Social Media Before Applying to Nontraditional Nurse Roles
Why It Matters
When you're applying for roles in healthcare tech, biotech, education, or corporate health, employers will check your online presence. Some use automated systems to scan posts, comments, and engagement history. This is your chance to make sure you show up as the professional, thoughtful, and hire-worthy version of yourself.
Step 1: Google Yourself
Search your full name + "nurse" or any social handles. See what comes up. Check image results and click through several pages. This is what a hiring manager may find.
Step 2: Audit Your Profiles
Go through your public social profiles (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter/X, Reddit, LinkedIn, etc.):
Update bios to reflect your professional aspirations (remove outdated jokes or vague blurbs).
Check profile pictures for professionalism (save the party pics for private profiles).
Review usernames ("@nurselover420" might need an upgrade).
Step 3: Review Old Posts & Comments
Skim through past content and remove anything that could be:
Overly negative about past employers or coworkers
Politically aggressive or inflammatory
Highly personal rants (especially about healthcare)
Unprofessional language, complaints, or venting
TikTok duets or reels that feel out of alignment with the brand you want to portray
Tip: On Facebook or Twitter, use tools like “Manage Posts” or advanced search filters by date or keywords.
Step 4: Clean Up Your Comments
Even if you didn’t make the post, your comment history can be visible. Search for your own username and skim for sarcastic or harsh replies. Recruiters will.
Step 5: Lock Down or Archive
If you're unsure about content but don’t want to delete it:
Use Instagram's "archive" function.
Set TikTok or Facebook content to "friends only" or "private."
Adjust privacy settings on older YouTube content or Reddit threads.
Step 6: Curate What You Do Want Them to See
Update LinkedIn with a strong summary, relevant experience, and a clean headshot.
Share or repost professional content (nursing innovation, tech trends, patient advocacy).
Post wins! Certificates, new skills, even thoughtful commentary about the state of healthcare shows you're engaged.
Step 7: Create a Digital First Impression That Aligns with Where You’re Headed
You're not just cleaning up the past, you're curating a future. Make sure your social media reflects your expertise, ambition, and readiness for something more than the bedside.
